A co-op is a business or organisation that’s owned and controlled by its members, to meet their shared needs. The members can be its customers, employees, residents or suppliers, who have a say in how the co-op is run. Every co-op across the world shares the same co-operative principles and values.
Handouts, while helpful in crises, often create dependency instead of fostering long-term solutions. They don’t address the root causes of poverty or empower individuals toward self-sufficiency. This reliance can limit opportunities for growth, perpetuating dependency rather than fostering independence and sustainability.
A cooperative model empowers individuals by fostering self-reliance, collective ownership, and sustainable development. Unlike non-profits and charities, cooperatives create long-term solutions, encouraging participation, skill-building, and economic independence, breaking the cycle of dependency.
