The AU Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want: 12 Years On..

Agenda 2063 paints a utopian Africa. Promises of progress, peace, and unity. But is it bold planning … or just wishful daydreams?

Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want is Africa’s blueprint and master plan for transforming the continent into the global powerhouse of the future. It is a bold strategic framework designed to deliver inclusive and sustainable development, while embodying Pan-African ideals of unity, self-determination, freedom, progress, and collective prosperity.

The vision of Agenda 2063 was born from Africa’s leaders recognizing the need to shift from the earlier struggle for political independence, led by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), to a renewed focus on inclusive social and economic development, regional integration, democratic governance, and peace and security. In 2013, during the African Union’s Golden Jubilee, heads of state and government signed the 50th Anniversary Solemn Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to build “an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena.”

This 50-year development trajectory (2013–2063) reflects Africa’s determination to harness structural transformation, peace, unity, gender equality, youth empowerment, globalization, ICT revolution, and new opportunities in agriculture, infrastructure, health, education, and value addition to its resources. Agenda 2063 also outlines Flagship Programmes and ten-year implementation plans designed to bring measurable, transformational outcomes for Africa’s people.
